The Mayor of Castlebar Councillor Ger Deere has embarked on a visit of the three secondary schools in Castlebar over the next few days to formally welcome the hundreds of first year students who will be starting their post primary studies in the county town.

Mayor of Castlebar and Fine Gael town councillor Ger Deere is calling on Mayo County Council to repair a section of Newport Road which has seen numerous traffic accidents in the recent past. The section of road in question is quite close to the entrance to the new cemetery where vehicles appear to lose control. A number of road traffic collisions have taken place at the location over the past number of months, with the most recent occurring last weekend. Local residents confirmed to Cllr Deere that a number of other accidents had occurred at the location in recent months.

Castlebar Town Council paid tribute to four pillars of the community who passed away over the last week. The members agreed to finish their meeting early as a mark of respect to the late Anthony McHugh, Mick Ruane, Donnie Murphy, and Maureen Heverin.
